If you really want to save money gardening, now is the time to get started.
Starting plants from seed is not only economical, but it gives you something to do until spring rolls around.
But first decide what you want to start from seed. Ed Flory, horticultural educator with the Penn State extension, said, "If you're planting seeds for a 10-by-10 garden, it's not worth it."
If you want to try five varieties of tomatoes and only want to grow five plants, starting seeds doesn't pay off.
Gardeners should be starting broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and head lettuce already. By mid-March, peppers and eggplants should be started.
Tomatoes can be started in early April.
Master gardeners Jeanne Dunstane and Pat Guckenberger gave some tried-and-true methods for getting started.
You don't need to buy special systems. Guckenberger recommended cardboard egg cartons.
Raising nutritious, fresh, homegrown vegetables in gardening containers is a joyful alternative if unsuitable area or insufficient space limited your vegetable gardening.
