Heritage issues tame Moonee Valley Racing Club's tower plans

THE Moonee Valley Racing Club faces a potential speed bump in its ambition to redevelop six hectares of its 40-hectare site in Moonee Ponds after a heritage assessment of the course.

The club had hoped to secure its future by building several 25-storey apartment towers (expected to house up to 6000 residents), a retail precinct, early-learning centre, kindergarten and 3000-square-metre park.

Details of the development were presented to Moonee Valley Council in February as part of a draft master plan.

Heritage consultants engaged by Moonee Valley Council have completed a heritage assessment of the site and identified three significant places considered worthy of heritage protection.

The sites are the club secretary's house and garden, the SR Burston Stand, and a precinct at the south-west corner of the site consisting of a number of significant structures, trees and gardens including the Alister Clark Rose Garden, Manikato Garden, main tote, horse stalls and birdcage, a brick
